Limited postgrad-specific university accommodation
Postgraduate students often have limited university-provided accommodation options when coming to universities in the UK, with postgrad-specific accommodation at the University of London being the exception rather than the rule. And until relatively recently, the postgraduate student was barely considered by private student accommodation providers either. But we’re here to assure you that postgraduate students at UK universities need somewhere to live, especially if they’re coming from overseas.
Postgrads want luxury student living
We think the postgraduate student market hasn’t been properly tapped into yet – these students are looking for clean, safe and in many cases, luxury student homes to live in whilst studying in the UK. Masters degree students want more comfort, security and somewhere that feels more like a home than lower budget student digs that are often the choice of undergrad students. Instead, postgrads are looking for extra luxury and a space to live and study in, not just somewhere to sleep.

International students are 25% of UK student population, and our key audience
Recent UK government figures report that over 685,000 international students opted to study at a UK HEI in 2024/25, equal to around 25% of the student population. Students from India made up 95,000 of this number – and students from India are also the key users of Postgrad.com, meaning our Accommodation Zone is a key place for them to look when considering their postgraduate journey in the UK. Students from China (another key demographic for Postgrad.com) are also coming to the UK in significant figures – 93,500+, and they too will need somewhere comfortable to live. Government stats reveal a rapid increase in students from Nigeria since 2017/18, and this is now the third most represented nationality in the UK – and another key audience for Postgrad.com.
Although according to official HESA statistics, there are 1% fewer students enrolled at UK HEIs in 2024/25 than the previous year, 68% of full-time postgraduate students studying at UK universities were from outside the UK. Student numbers from Pakistan increased by 5% and the number of Nepalese students – being 17,385 was more than 10 times the number of students choosing UK universities in 2020/21. Visitors from these countries are emerging as key users of our website, too.
Increased number of international MRes students
Following recent student visa changes, the UK has seen an increase in international students enrolling on MRes courses, with some UK universities expanding their postgraduate research course offering to cater to this demand. For example, according to data from Times Higher Education, the University of Greater Manchester has seen an increase of international enrolment on its MRes courses from 24 students four years ago to 1,748 students in the academic year 2025/26. And these students will all need somewhere to live, too.
